Evangelism, Discipleship, and Apologetics Training
Imagine getting a call from the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. They have scheduled the largest television audience in history for a Billy Graham Crusade tonight at 7:pm. Billy has taken ill and cannot do the broadcast. They want to know if you would be available to take his place. You would have 60 minutes to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with the whole world! What would you do? Would you know what to say if you had that opportunity? If not, why not? 1 Peter 3:15 says,
But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you.
Fact: God left us a perfect systematic theology of evangelism that cannot be improved upon by any man or man-made organization. While it is true that God can use any verse in the more than 31,000 verses in the Bible to draw a person to faith (including the genealogies); there is one thing in the Bible that transcends all excuses and casts down every argument that would exalt itself against the knowledge of God. Psalm 19:7 says,
The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.
THE MOST POWERFUL APOLOGETIC ARGUMENT OF ALL
I personally enjoy the art and the science of defending the Christian faith known as apologetics. No, we are not apologizing for being Christians. We are defending why we believe what we believe. That includes legal, philosophical, theological, and moral arguments, science and much, much, more. The latest discoveries from science; for example, are wonderful for the edification and the building up of the saints. Certainly these intellectual arguments can and do play a part in helping those who have sincere questions and concerns about Christianity.
Furthermore, I do believe it would be wonderful if we were all well versed in Hebrew and Greek grammar, Bible interpretation, Bible prophecy, church history, comparative religion, archaeology, philosophy, creation science, biology, logic, and debate!
However, none of these academic disciplines (as wonderful as they are) has an ounce of power to convict a man of sin, which is ultimately, the real issue. Sin is what separates us from God (Isa. 59:1-2), and sin is what Jesus came to save us from (Matt. 1:21). Therefore; you do not have to become a scientist, a lawyer, or a philosopher in order to access the same power of persuasion the prophets and the apostles had. Moral truth is sacred, unchanging, it originated in the mind of God, and it’s written on every man’s heart (Rom. 2:15).
In Luke 16:31 Jesus said,
If they do not hear Moses and the prophets [Moses’ enforcers], neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.
Jesus is saying, there is one argument more compelling than someone you know coming back from the dead to warn you of the judgment to come! It’s the moral Law that God revealed to Moses.
The late Dr. Walter Martin (author of The Kingdom of the Cults) was fond of saying, “If they don’t want Jesus, be sure and leave them with Moses.” In other words, if they don’t want the free gift of salvation by grace, be sure and tell them how good they will have to be to save themselves!
The Puritans used to teach that there were three things in the Bible: Law, grace, and illustrations of both. You see dozens of examples of this in both the Old and the New Testament. It’s a joy to discover them. Knowing how to use the law lawfully (1 Tim. 1:8) is where we get our conviction to present these lessons with the boldness of a lion, joy unspeakable, and a lot of fruit to show for it.
EVERY DEATH PROVES THE MORAL LAW IS STILL IN EFFECT
There is nothing in the course of mankind’s history, nothing in the universe that so established, upheld, or confirmed the validity of the Law as when the wrath of God was poured out on the sinless Lamb of God at the cross of Calvary. But its work continues.
Since the beginning of time, every man, woman, and child that has ever been born has died (with the exceptions of Enoch and Elijah, and that may still occur if they are the two witnesses of Rev. 11). Every time someone dies, it establishes the fact that God’s law is still in force. Every death proves that the Law is still in effect. The Law says, “If you sin, you shall surely die (see Rom. 6:23; Gen. 2:17).” All men die because all men sin. No scientific discovery will ever change that. Christ alone holds the keys of life and death (Rev. 1:18).
The law of God condemns you to death, but the grace of God can raise you from the dead. Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” Romans 6:23 says, “The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ.” All men have sinned, that is why all men die. In the context of evangelism, a man must be condemned before he can be converted. A correct understanding of law and grace is a matter of life and death, and essential doctrine for all who believe.
When you know how to share the Gospel biblically, you can say what the Apostle Paul said in 1 Cor. 2:1-5,
And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. I was with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom but in demonstration of the Spirit and power that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but the power of God.
Against all odds, 2,000 years ago 12 men turned the world upside down by dedicating themselves to these two spiritual disciplines–prayer and the ministry of the Word. It was against all odds because the Roman Empire ruled the world with an iron fist. They won their arguments by killing their enemies. The Empire was doing everything in its power to stop Christianity from spreading including feeding Christians to the lions!
Today, we have the incredible perspective of being able to look back over 2,000 years of recorded history and what do we see? There are more Christians alive at this moment than the total population of the Roman Empire over its entire 500 year history and the lions and the tigers are on the endangered spices list!
Anyone can recite the Lord’s Prayer in less than 30 seconds, but no one could master it in a thousand life times. Every word is a seed and every phrase is filled with wisdom, revelation and the power to change forever your life and the lives of those you love! And as for the ministry of the Word? God’s power has never diminished and when God’s people do God’s work God’s way, they can expect God’s results. The ministry of the Word has all the power of Mt. Sinai but precious few avail themselves of it. We have a seminar dedicated to these two spiritual disciplines that will turn the life of any church upside down if they actually employed these God given spiritual disciplines.
Voice in the Wilderness Ministries has a live multimedia presentation entitled, God’s Three Witnesses. It covers: Creation, the Word of God (Living and written) and conscience (the moral law written on every heart, Romans 2:15). These are God’s arguments and as such, cannot be improved upon by any man or man-made organization.
If you like Louie Giglio and Ken Ham, you’ll love this! The response we are getting to this message is absolutely off-the-charts. You can see the response from young people by going to the “Endorsements” tab on this website. But don’t take their word for it, here’s a sample from our Gospel tract, http://voice-wilderness.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Gods-Three-Witnesses.pdf
We are passionate about reaching people for Christ. Our goal is to help all Christians understand why we believe what we believe, and then to articulate a compelling presentation of the Gospel themselves.
Our best-selling book titled, God the Final frontier-Positive Proof for His Existence and His love is only 90 pages, it has 40 spectacular photographs, and it’s filled with relevant answers to the questions people are asking.
We have a way that churches can reach out to every student in their communities. Can you imagine what a joy it would be to know that your church made the Gospel available to every high school and college student in your town?
This ministry opportunity is ideal for churches who would like to reach out to their communities but really don’t know how. We can and we must help our young people become fully devoted followers of the Lord Jesus Christ, willing to live for the cause!
